The Robert Smalls Historical Foundation

The Beginning

How the Robert Smalls Historical Foundation Began

The Robert Smalls Historical Foundation was begun by Lester Smalls, a native of Savannah, Georgia, who now resides in Silver Spring, Maryland.  He learned about Robert Smalls and his legacy from stories told to him by older members of his family, who were born on St. Helena Island, South Carolina.

While vacationing in the Beaufort, South Carolina, area during the summer of 2000, Mr. Smalls located the Robert Smalls home at 511 Prince Street and was saddened by the fact that it was listed for sale by Lowcounty Real Estate.  He made an appointment to tour the house and, as a result, became inspired to do what he could to increase public awareness and keep the legacy of this great American hero alive.

The Robert Smalls Historic Foundation, Inc., was established by Mr. Smalls in 2001 to promote, preserve, and increase public awareness of the historical legacy of Robert Smalls.

The Robert Smalls Historic Foundation, Inc., is a nonprofit organization and contributions are deductible under section 170(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Code of the United States.
